The environmental sector in Turkey has undergone exponential development over the last 15 years, among other reasons due to the country’s candidacy for EU membership, which has made it necessary to transpose European regulations into national legislation. With an average growth rate of over 5% per year in the last 20 years and a population growth rate of 1.28%, the lack of waste management infrastructure and the low recycling rate are pressing problems.

Successive governments have prioritised investment in water supply and waste treatment plants, with 59 billion euros invested over the last 12 years. Even so, investment in this sector is expected to remain at the same levels for the next 7 years.
