THE ‘HALAL’ DEMAND

THE HALAL DEMAND

There is an increasing interest in halal products in the world and in Turkey. Sensitive brands that see this tendency are on “showing off”and displaying all the benefits of using their products. Production processes and application of the product determine whether they are halal or not.

The halal brands in recent years have been the living examples of the need in the halal sector in Turkey. The demand of halal food is 860 billion USD in the World. There is a tremendous need when we add the sectors such as halal finance, halal medicine, halal cosmetics, halal cleaning, halal tourism and halal logistics. The Association for the Research and Certification of Food and Nutrient Substances (GIMDES) President, Dr. Hüseyin Kami Büyüközer, said only halal products and services demand has exceeded 2.5 trillion dollars.

The market for halal certified products is very large. This includes about 2 billion Muslims in the World and millions of people who prefer Halal-certified products. An increasing awareness of Muslims has wide spread the demand for halal products. According to GIMDES,halal certified products have been exported to 75 countries until today. Büyüközer stated that increasing consciousness of halal bite, halal product and halal consumption of consumers has enabled them to turn to halal certified products. And also that “Today, Halal Food and Halal Certification began to be heard by almost every segment of our society”.

Active in our country there are 40 Halal World Market operators attending the consumer demand. Consumers now want to distinguish easily the product to be reliable and halal certified. The most practical way of this distinction is the institutional halal logos. Muslim halal products consumers, because of the rising demand for ‘SundayHalal’, is growing day by day.

The Halal Certificate, especially food products abroad, is a certificate that gives priority to receiving. Büyüközer: “GIMDES certified companies have been instrumental in the export of about 20 billion USD. Certification requests are increasing day by day and up to now, 500 companies have been awarded with GIMDES Halal Certificates for 10.000 kinds of products, “he concluded.

Coşkun Şentürk, Deputy Secretary General of the Turkish Standards Institute (TSE), examines also whether food and non-food products are halal on behalf of the public, and said that this year the number of applications increased by 2.6 times.

Most of the companies that demand Halal certification consist of meat and meat products sector, followed by grain, vegetables and animal oils. The distribution of the sectors which are prominent in the requests for the TSE (Turkish Standart Institution) Halal Food Conformity Certificate are as follows:

1.Meat and Meat Products %31

2.Cereal and meat products %16

3.Vegetable and Animal Oils % 14

4.Sugar and Confectionery Products %11

5.Fruits & Vegetables Products %10

Halal products are preferred in Turkey and in the countries of the region. As a result, many brands are on their way to prove that food or non-food goods are more healthy. While the number of inspection agencies are increasingly in demand, most of the applicants come from food companies. GİMDES President Hüseyin Kami Büyüközer, who is one of the leading players in the industry that assessed the demand situation of the companies, emphasized that the products of the brands are important to document that they are halal.

Halal Audit and Certification Center Chairman of the Board of Acce, argued that the potential of halal food in Turkey exceeds 70 billion USD. As he reciently stated “there are halal certified product requests from Central Asia, close to the Arab countries, and they are asking what more halal products can they get from Turkey”.

In other words, we have a very big sector. It has over taken issues such as faith and well-being, based on safe food.”If companies produce halal in Turkey, they will sell a lot abroad” he pointed. “Reciently Iran demanded 300 tons of halal certified chicken from Turkish companies”.

In this growing sector, Turkey is in a strong position to respond to all Islamic societies, both because of its geographical situation and for being a muslim country. However the halal market is not only food products but it is increasing day by day in other sectors such as cosmetics, packaging and general services, and it is seen that there is a wide potential market in the World.
