Elon Musk visited President Erdoğan: Tesla and Starlink offer

The 78th UN General Assembly took place from September 18-26 and focused on macro challenges such as global warming, poverty and access to food, as well as the impact of war and global inflation on these challenges, and the increasing scale and cost of humanitarian needs. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan also addressed the critical meeting and made a number of diplomatic contacts.

Before the General Assembly, where world leaders came together, President Erdoğan had an important visitor. President Erdoğan met with the famous entrepreneur Elon Musk, owner of X and CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, at the Turkevi in New York. The meeting was closely followed by the world’s leading press organizations.

Musk came with his son to the meeting, which was reported by Politico, a famous magazine that publishes in the field of diplomacy and international relations, with the title “Relations to watch as world leaders come together”.

So, what was discussed during the meeting?

In the statement made by the Presidency of Communications, it was stated that President Erdoğan invited Musk to Teknofest to be held in Izmir. In the statement made on the social media account of the Directorate of Communications, it was also stated that President Erdoğan called on Musk to establish Tesla’s seventh factory in Turkey. In addition, President Erdoğan underlined that cooperation opportunities with SpaceX may arise in the steps taken and to be taken within the scope of Turkey’s space program.

Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Minister of Industry and Technology Mehmet Fatih Kacır, Mustafa Varank, Chairman of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey’s Industry, Trade, Energy, Natural Resources, Information and Technology Committee, and Ali Taha Koç, Head of the Digital Transformation Office of the Presidency of the Republic, were also present at the reception, which was closed to the press.

At the end of the meeting, President Erdoğan presented Musk with an English translation of his book, A Fairer World is Possible.

Four of Tesla’s six most important factories are located in the US. The factory opened in 2010 in Fremont, California, employs 22,000 people and produces the Model S, Model X, Model 3 and Model Y. The factory opened in Storey County, Nevada in 2016 produces batteries, Tesla Powerwall and Tesla Semi truck; the factory opened in Buffalo, New York in 2017 produces Solar Roof and Superchargers; and the factory opened in Austin, Texas in 2022 produces Model Y. This factory will also produce batteries, Cybertruck and next-generation vehicles.

The first of Tesla’s two factories outside the US was opened in Shanghai, China in 2019. With 20 thousand employees, Model 3, Model Y and Supercharger are produced in the factory where the most employees work after the Fremont factory. Model Y is produced in the factory opened in Grünheide, Germany in 2022. Model Ys come to Turkey via Germany. Battery and Model 3 production is also planned in this factory. If this happens, Model 3 is also expected to come to Turkey.
