TURKEY GLASS AND GLASSWARE SECTOR

According to the information compiled from Turkey Statistical Institute (TSI), Turkey made a big step on export in glass and glassware. Turkey earned $ 40 million in revenue more this year comparing to the January-June period last year from exports of glass and glassware.
Glass and glassware imports decreased by 27 percent in the first 6 months of 2019 compared to the same period of the previous year, while exports increased by 8 percent. In the first half of this year, 534 million 821 thousand dollars of glass and glassware exports were realized, this figure was recorded as 494 million dollars last year. Exports of glass and glassware from Turkey was carried out to 164 countries in the said period. The most exported country was Italy with 45 million 492 thousand dollars. This figure accounted for 8 percent of total exports. In the exports; Italy was followed by Germany with 43 million 649 thousand dollars, Israel with 26 million 827 thousand dollars, Spain with 26 million 196 thousand dollars and USA with 25 million 363 thousand dollars. In the given period, Turkey’s imports in this chapter fell to 328 million 407 thousand dollars. Thus, imports of glass and glassware, which was 453 million 873 thousand dollars in the first half of last year, decreased by 125 million 465 thousand dollars. China took the first place among the countries that imported glass and glassware with 65 million dollarsChina was followed by Germany with 38 million dollars, Italy and France with 25 million dollars and Bulgaria with 20 million dollars.
The most important inputs used in glass production are sand soda, dolomite and quartz. As our country is rich in these resources, 98% of the domestic raw materials are used in the Turkish glass industry. Recently, the Turkish glass industry has shown rapid growth and companies have made new investments both in Turkey and abroad in line with the regional leadership and growth strategy. The Turkish glass sector has investments abroad in Bulgaria, Russian Federation, Georgia, Ukraine and Egypt. Global economic crises in recent years have led to a slowdown and postponement of demand in the glass sector as in all other sectors. However, domestic demand for glass due to the declining economy in Turkey recently seen an increase in per capita household consumption expenditure in real terms the price of glass products and the positive effects of the increase in national income and consumption has increased. Looking at the glass products one by one, it is seen that the demand is directed towards products with high added value. For example, the construction sector, which uses flat glass as input, demands processed glass products such as double glass, coated glass and laminated glass instead of raw glass. Different designs come to the forefront in glassware instead of products of classic shapes and colors. In addition to different designs in glass packaging, lightening and strengthening efforts direct the demand. Glass fiber, glass wool and other glass products are involved in applications that are constantly differentiating and enriching in many areas. The glass sector is associated with its products and many other industries.
• Flat glass and processed glass products to the construction, agricultural (greenhouse) automotive, energy, white goods and furniture sectors,
• Glass packaging for food, beverage, pharmaceutical, cosmetic industries,
• Glassware for the home sector, tourism, food, promotion and retail sectors,
• Glass fiber, glass reinforced plastic (GRP) products are input, while GRP products give input to construction, vehicles (land, sea, railway), furniture, pipes, electrical and electronic industries.
Quality, color, design, printing demands of these sectors are answered, machinery, equipment and technology investments are made to meet their demands, and new products are developed and innovations in the sector are pioneered. The Turkish glass industry will continue to grow in line with the objectives of maximizing productivity, turning to high value-added products, improving technology, and using management and entrepreneurial skills at the highest level in the absence of a significant crisis in external economies, economic, social and political areas.
